Spring Green Campus | Valley Farm

Tour Valley Farm in Spring Green, WI

Valley Farm, part of our Spring Green Campus, consists of flat, highly productive farmland along the Wisconsin River, and is ideal for intensive research plots, our tree crop improvement program, and large-scale windbreak and alley cropping demonstrations. In 2022, we planted 12 acres of hybrid hazels, a five cultivar hazelnut pruning trial, and a 12 cultivar elderberry variety trial. At this week’s farm tour, you can learn more about our latest persimmon planting and our bird bioacoustic research project on the farm.

What do I do with this fruit? 4 recipes for black currant, serviceberry (juneberry) and elderflower

Elderberry, black currant and serviceberry (juneberry) are all perennial tree crops that are well suited for Midwestern agriculture. At our demonstration farm in Urbana, IL, elderberry and black currant are the alley crop between tree rows of heartnut (Japanese walnut), and serviceberry (juneberry) is interplanted in one row of one windbreak. Read the recipes recommended by Illinois Agroforestry Educator, MJ Oviatt.
