How Much Carbon Can Be Added to Cropland and Grazing Land by Planting Trees? Based On Our Experience, A Global Study Is Underestimating

Agroforestry is increasingly touted as an important climate change mitigation strategy – and indeed it is. Yet one of its most important benefits, its extremely efficient use of land, does not seem to be on the radar of the big environmental NGOs as much as it should be. In our last installment, we looked at a report from the World Resources Institute that did mention agroforestry, but did not look at its ability to grow more food and timber per acre than monocultures of crops and timber grown separately. In the context of their report on scarcity of land to meet demand for crops and timber, that seemed to us a major missing piece.

Agroforestry Farm Network expands to include Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin

The Savanna Institute is expanding its network of agroforestry partner farms to include sites in Illinois and Iowa, in addition to the Wisconsin farms that joined the network in 2025. The new Agroforestry Farm Network provides opportunities for farmers to collaborate and share examples of how to integrate trees successfully on farms for conservation and for profit.
